Training Differences and Similarities Between Marathon and Ultra Trail Running
Pre-Introduction
In 2024, I will be taking on the mecca of trail mountain running at the UTMB OCC race in Chamonix, France. As a seasoned marathon runner for over a decade, switching to trails and tackling Mont Blanc have been in the making. That being said, I am also planning to race two marathon world majors, the Boston and Chicago Marathon in 2024. Training for these two race distances/events differ based on a multitude of factors. This is an overview for those who want to get a better understanding between the two race categories and how you can attempt both successfully.
Introduction
Running a marathon and competing in an ultra trail race require both endurance and strength. While they share some commonalities in training principles, there are distinct differences owing to the nature of each event. The marathon is blend of endurance and strength, while an ultra mountain race demands more muscular endurance on high altitude/terrain.
Understanding the Events
Before diving into the training aspects, it’s crucial to understand the events themselves:
Marathons:
- Distance: Traditionally 42.2 kilometers (26.2 miles).
